il giardino delle meraviglie

[The Garden of Wonders]

There is a vegetable garden in the Giudecca prison: no cameras, no guards, just the sound of the lagoon. An old Venetian song whistles from the nearby construction site, the aroma of a sauce wafts in from a window, and the salty smell of the sea drifts in from the sea. Le Jardin de Merveilles is not a eulogy to prison. It is the story of a few women clinging to life through a turnip or a cherry. Their smiles at work convey the ultimate meaning of the documentary.

On Tuesday 18 November, this story was the second event in the “Un mare dentro” series, with a screening of Il giardino delle meraviglie at the Teatro Ristori.

We were joined by director Anush Hamzehian and Vania Carlot from the Rio Terà dei Pensieri Cooperative, moderated by Francesco Lughezzani.

We discussed work, freedom, dignity and care: the meaning of work when it restores face and value, a prison that shows its limitations when it tries to be useful, and what lies beyond the bars, where the idea of freedom begins to change shape and make us change our perspective.
