The project in brief

Learning to be free: because in prison, learning is not only the acquisition of skills — it is the possibility of imagining what comes next.

In Bolivia, between La Paz and Cochabamba, the project strengthens technical training as a tool for rehabilitation and reintegration for young people and women deprived of their liberty. It works on educational content, on skills that generate income, on productive spaces inside and outside detention centres. It is the continuation of Progettomondo's longstanding commitment to restorative justice, begun in Bolivia over fifteen years ago. Because a more inclusive prison system starts with what people, once released, will know how to do.

Our contribution

Support for the project Learning to be Free, promoted by Progettomondo between La Paz and Cochabamba, Bolivia, for the social and occupational reintegration of young people and women in detention and their families.

Support for technical training courses and skills certification, with the updating of curricula based on market demand and the introduction of modules on employability and entrepreneurship for teachers in the Alternative Education Centres (CEA).

Contribution to the setting up of productive spaces within detention centres — including Qalauma, El Abra, Obrajes, Miraflores and San Sebastián Mujeres — and to the promotion of national meetings on education in contexts of detention.
